Why See an Endodontist?

If you need a root canal, see an endodontist–the specialist in saving teeth.

Endodontists specialize in restoring your natural teeth and are committed to helping you maintain your natural smile. Their expert training, perfected techniques, and superior technologies mean you get the highest quality care with the best result. Your natural teeth are worth saving!

When is it time to see an endodontist?

It’s important to take care of real tooth pain as soon as possible. You’ll feel better and likely save your tooth. Some people may fear having work done on their teeth, but there’s no need to fear root canal treatment. When it comes to relieving your dental discomfort, endodontists can usually get you feeling better and back to work the same day.

If you’re experiencing tooth pain and have sensitivity to hot or cold, it might be time to let an endodontist examine your tooth.

Alternatively, if you have been involved in an accident receiving facial trauma and/or there is swelling around the teeth, gums or your face, make an appointment with an endodontist that day. In any case, delaying treatment for a tooth that is acting up may complicate your case and lessen the chances of saving your tooth.

Endodontists obtain two or more years of specialized training above and beyond dental school. They are highly skilled in diagnosing tooth pain and extremely skilled in performing procedures within your tooth.

Why are endodontists called specialists?

While all endodontists are dentists, less than three percent of dentists are endodontists. Just like a doctor in any other field, endodontists are specialists because they’ve completed an additional two or more years of training beyond dental school. Their additional training focuses on diagnosing tooth pain and performing root canal treatment and other procedures relating to the interior of the tooth. In many cases, a diseased tooth can be saved with endodontic treatment. For this reason, endodontists proudly refer to themselves as Specialists in Saving Teeth.

What procedures does an endodontist handle?

Endodontists mainly do root canal treatments, perform various endodontic surgeries, and address traumatic dental injuries when they arise. Their overall goal is to save your natural teeth whenever possible; in spite of this, an endodontist will always look at all treatment options to determine the best course of action for your individual case.

An endodontist limits his or her practice solely to endodontic treatments usually performing 20-25 root canal treatments a week. Conversely, a general dentist may only do two root canals a week. Specialized treatment will give you the best outcome and you’ll heal faster. For this reason, dentists and endodontists often work together so that you receive the highest standard of care for all of your dental needs.

Why should my endodontist be a member of AAE?

The American Association of Endodontists is the professional membership association for endodontists, endodontic residents, educators and other dental professionals who have an interest in the specialty. More than 90 percent of U.S. endodontists belong to the AAE, sharing a dedication to the highest standards of excellence in endodontic care. The AAE supports its members’ pursuit of excellence through research, education, leadership, advocacy, philanthropy and service.
